Windows runners on BYOC
Running Windows Server BYOC runners, and the differences from Linux worth planning for.
Windows BYOC runners are supported on AWS and Azure, and more limited on GCP. The mechanics are the same; the operational profile is not.
What differs from Linux
- Boot time is substantially longer, so warm pool sizing matters more
- Images are larger, which affects launch time and storage cost
- Defender scanning the workspace is a real performance cost — exclude it
- Licensing is included in the instance cost on both AWS and Azure
